Red Light Therapy for Sports Recovery & Performance
Boost your training and speed up recovery with red light therapy. Used in sports and physiotherapy, red and near-infrared light helps improve circulation, increase energy production (ATP), and support muscle repair.
Before exercise: it enhances performance, increases blood flow, and prepares muscles for activity.
After exercise: it accelerates recovery, reduces soreness, supports connective tissue healing, and helps break down lactic acid faster.
Whether you’re an athlete, gym-goer, or recovering from injury, red light therapy is a natural way to improve performance, prevent fatigue, and recover quicker.
Treatment before exercise can improve performance through increased supply of cell energy (ATP), oxygen and antioxidants. In addition, the release of inflammatory parameters is positively influenced, which can reduce unpleasant after-effects of intensive exercise. Connective tissue, fascia and bone tissue primarily benefit from the increased collagen formation.
Higher lactate levels after intensive physical activity are reflected in muscle hyperacidity and reduced performance. The reduction of lactate levels in the blood, which has been proven in various studies, is an indicator that the use of red light and near infrared improves cell metabolism, increases blood circulation and optimises oxygen supply in tissues. It has also been known for a long time that photobiomodulation has a positive effect on the available ATP thereby improving the energy supply in the body
The muscles, fascia system, bones and joints all benefit from follow-up treatment after intensive exercise. It reduces inflammatory parameters, the level of lactate in the blood, optimises wound healing and improves repair processes. As most joints can be easily reached by light radiation, a positive influence on the joint membranes (synovia) can also be assumed. The synovia are responsible for the production of joint fluid (synovial fluid), which accelerates regeneration.
Supporting physio-therapeutic measures with light can accelerate the recovery of the musculoskeletal system. While hot air and heat treatments function on the surface, photobiomodulation can reach deeper layers of tissue. The increased supply of ATP makes the muscle supple and increases its ability to react. This effect is ideal as an effective and gentle preparation for a massage, as a metabolism stimulation and as a support for muscle building.
With increasing age, blood circulation, metabolism, regenerative ability, flexibility of connective tissue and vessels as well as cell division continuously decrease. Red light and near infrared reduce these signs of ageing, in particular by activating the mitochondria to produce ATP, improving blood circulation and metabolism and optimising cell renewal.

Almost all signs of ageing are related to the decreasing activity of the mitochondria. These “cell power plants” generate the molecule ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and are essential for the maintenance of all life functions. ATP not only acts at the point of treatment, but can be distributed throughout the body via the bloodstream.
As we age, cell tissue loses flexibility and elasticity, which has a negative effect on metabolic performance. Cell membranes become less permeable and the permeability of the vascular system decreases. As a result, nutrients are no longer transported to and waste is no longer transported away as effectively and the supply of energy and oxygen is reduced. Light with suitable wavelengths improves blood circulation and substance exchange.
Numerous studies have shown that the application of light has a positive effect on telomerase concentration levels. Telomerase is an enzyme/catalyst that is able to lengthen the telomeres (= “protective caps” on the ends of the chromosomes) and thereby prevent actual genetic information from being damaged during frequent cell division

Red light therapy has been used by cosmetic institutes and dermatologists for many years, to naturally reduce the causes of skin ageing and to improve the skin’s appearance. The light has a regenerating effect on the skin, increasing natural collagen production and elastin synthesis as well as the metabolism of skin cells (fibroblasts), which can reduce wrinkles and improve the overall appearance of the skin. In contrast to invasive treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, microneedling or injections, the skin is not injured with the light treatment. It is safe, painless and has no side effects when used properly. The light activation of the skin also improves the effectiveness of cosmetic active ingredients..
Fibroblasts (connective tissue cells) produce collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which are responsible for tensile strength, elasticity and fullness of the skin. From the age of 25, the metabolism of the fibroblasts slows down, causing the collagen content to decrease by an average of 1% per year. The red light is absorbed by the fibroblasts and increases the body’s own production of collagen and elastin. This tightens the skin and reduces wrinkles and fine lines.
Red light can help reduce the appearance of
unwanted pigmentation and skin discolouration by
regulating melanin production, thereby promoting
the lightening of hyper-pigmented skin. Equally,
areas of skin with too little pigment, are stimulated
to form missing pigment.
The stimulation of regenerative and reparative processes in the skin contributes to accelerated wound healing. This is one of the longest researched effects of red light and is therefore often used in the context of invasive procedures for skin rejuvenation to shorten recovery times (“social downtime”).
Overproduction of sebum and clogged ducts lead to blackheads and pimples. Various studies show that red light and near infrared can reduce both sebum production and inflammatory processes, accelerating the skin’s natural healing process. This leads to a reduction of lesions and an improvement in the skin’s appearance.
Red light helps improve the antioxidant status of the skin, thereby reducing unwanted side effects of UV light. At the same time, desired effects of UV light are intensified by improved blood circulation and oxygen supply to the skin. Therefore, modern tanning salons also use red light in addition to UV light (“hybrid light technology”).
In various studies, the symptoms of skin diseases such as psoriasis, neurodermatitis and rosacea have also been significantly reduced. However, the treatment of medical conditions should always be in consultation with the treating doctor.

Fatigue, exhaustion, lethargy, loss of appetite and weight gain are typical signs of the winter blues, also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Using red light and near infrared can be an effective solution to counteract winter blues and sleep disorders.
Our body controls our sleep-wake rhythm with the production of the ‘happiness hormone’ serotonin under the influence of light and the ‘sleep hormone’ melatonin in the dark. In the dark winter months, this rhythm often falls out of balance. By using light, the natural sleep-wake rhythm can be restored and the winter blues can be reduced. A study compared the effectiveness of very bright white light (Bright Light Therapy, BLT) and barely visible near infrared light (NIR). The results demonstrated there were no significant differences between BLT and NIR.
Most people are exposed to a lot of artificial light which disrupts the circadian rhythm, ie the normal 24- hour rhythm. Blue light from smartphones and screens, particularly in the evening can have a negative impact on sleep quality because it impairs the production of the sleep hormone melatonin. The use of red light can help regulate the body’s natural chronobiological functions and increase the production of melatonin, promoting sleep and regeneration. It can also be used to re-balance the body’s biorhythms after jet lag
A study of female athletes showed that sleep quality was significantly improved after just 14 days of regular red light therapy in the form of 30-minute full-body sessions in the evenings. The athletes’ blood melatonin levels also increased and their endurance performance increased significantly. Current research results also highlight the positive effects of using red light on the so-called glymphatic system in the human brain. By stimulating this system, the regenerative efficiency of sleep is promoted.

Different wavelengths of light interact with the body at different tissue depths, influencing different cell types and biological processes. RedWave by Wellsystem is designed to deliver a scientifically balanced combination of wavelengths using advanced LED and low-pressure light technology.
The system uses:
In addition, full-body red light is delivered via low-pressure light technology emitting between 630–680 nm, allowing uniform exposure across large surface areas of the body.
When applied to the entire body, red and near-infrared light can produce systemic effects, meaning benefits are not limited to the area exposed. These effects may include increased ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production within the mitochondria, improved cellular signalling, influence on nitric oxide and antioxidant pathways, and hormonal effects mediated via the eyes.
Historically, red and near-infrared therapy was applied only locally due to technological limitations. Advances in high-performance LED technology now allow multiple wavelengths to be combined into large-area systems, making full-body applications both possible and effective.
The wavelengths 630 nm, 660 nm, and 850 nm are among the most researched and clinically studied ranges in photobiomodulation. While some devices promote higher wavelengths, current evidence shows that higher wavelengths do not automatically mean better results. What matters most is using the right wavelengths, in the right combination, at therapeutic intensities, to stimulate light-responsive molecules and increase cellular activity at different tissue depths.
By working simultaneously, this carefully selected light spectrum supports local and whole-body cellular performance, making RedWave by Wellsystem an effective and evidence-led approach to full-body red and near-infrared light therapy.
